History & Origins of Word Hunt
Word Hunt belongs to the family of letter-tile puzzles that Boggle helped popularise in 1972. Where those games ask you to trace words across a grid of neighbouring letters, this one strips the format to its essence: a single fixed tray of letters, your vocabulary, and a ticking clock. Every round secretly starts from one source word, and dozens of smaller words hide inside it.
The core idea is older than any board game. In parlour word games players have long raced to write down every word they can build from a shared set of letters, then compared lists to see who found the rarest entries. A surprisingly small alphabet turns out to hold remarkable variety, which is why the challenge never ages.
The modern twist is the ninety-second sprint with three difficulty bands. Easy deals an eight-letter source word, while Medium and Hard move up to ten and twelve letters, which quietly removes the easiest finds. Because every accepted word scores one point, breadth beats rarity: a stream of quick three-letter words will usually outscore one long word.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Chasing only long words. Every accepted word scores exactly one point, so a steady stream of quick three-letter finds beats waiting for one big word.
- Reusing a tray letter more times than it appears, like typing two Es when the tray holds one. The word is rejected as using letters not in the tray.
- Submitting a word you already found. Repeats are blocked with an ’already in your list’ message, and with only 90 seconds on the clock, retyping old words wastes time.
- Typing words shorter than three letters. Anything under three is rejected instantly, so short words like IT or TO never score even when the tray holds their letters.
- Sitting on the Hint: it reveals one possible word for only three seconds, then vanishes. Read it as soon as it appears and type the word before it fades.
Tips & Strategy
Start with short common words to build confidence and combos.
Scan prefixes like RE-, UN- and -ING to unlock longer finds.
If you are stuck, use one Hint to reveal a word you have not found.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Word Hunt free to play?
- Yes — Word Hunt on ThinkyPlay is completely free, with no download and no sign-up.
- Can I reuse a letter?
- No. Each tray letter has a set count and can be used at most once per word.
- Is there a daily word hunt?
- Yes — the Daily Word Hunt gives every player the same letter tray each day.
- Does a long word score more than a short one?
- No. Every accepted word is worth exactly one point, so a quick three-letter find adds to your total just as fast as a long one. The counter at the top shows how many words you have and how many more are still possible.
- Why do some tray tiles turn pale while I type?
- A tile dims as soon as that letter has been used as many times as it appears in the tray for the word you are building. Erase a character from your word and the matching tile brightens again.
- What happens when time runs out?
- A results panel shows how many words you found out of the total possible and your best score for that difficulty. Close it to keep reviewing your list, or start a fresh 90-second game.
