Crossword Clue Language: Abbr, Plurals & ? Wordplay
Beyond plain definitions, crossword clues hide signals in their grammar and punctuation. Read those signals and hard clues become easy.
1. Inflection is a clue
If the clue is plural, the answer is plural; a past-tense clue needs a past-tense word. “Dogs, for example” is PETS, not PET — the grammar of the clue names the form of the answer.
2. Abbreviation markers
Words like “abbr.”, “for short”, “briefly” or “org.” mean the answer is abbreviated — think AMA for a doctor’s group or INIT for a first name.
3. The question mark says wordplay
A clue ending in ? signals a trick: read it literally and it sounds odd, so re-read it as a pun or sideways definition instead. If a clue seems to have nothing to do with the word, it is usually the ? clue doing its job.
4. Parts of speech count
“Angry” gives an adjective (IRATE); “to anger” would give a verb. Match the part of speech and the crossing letters will usually confirm it.
