Skyscrapers Strategy: Skyline Clues and Solving Tips

Skyscrapers looks like a view of rooftops, but a skyline clue is just a running count of new-record heights along one row or column.

1. What a skyline clue actually counts

Stand at any side and the clue is how many towers you truly see: the first always counts, then only towers taller than everything before them, because a tall building hides every shorter one.

A skyline clue is a count of records along a line; reading the same row from the other end usually gives a different picture, and a clue never falls below 1 or exceeds the board size.

  • Clues run 1 to 4 on 4×4, up to 5 on 5×5, and up to 6 on 6×6 as the boards grow.

2. Clue 1 and full-length clues are anchors

Every row holds every height once, so the tallest tower sits somewhere in each line. That single fact turns the two extreme clues into instant placements.

A clue of 1 means the first tower from that side hides everything behind it, which is only possible if it is the tallest; pin the tallest onto the cell next to a 1. A clue equal to the board size means every tower is visible, so heights climb strictly from shortest to tallest and the line reads 1, 2, 3, … n from that side.

  • Hunt every clue 1 first; each pins a tallest tower and usually unlocks its whole row and column.

3. Every row and column is a permutation of 1 to n

Skyscrapers is a Latin-square puzzle in disguise: every height appears exactly once per row and per column, so no number may repeat inside a line, the fastest sanity check you have.

Select a cell and type with the number pad and keep the eraser for experiments: a value can be legal for its row while already used in its column.

  • When a height fits only one remaining cell of a row or column, drop it there before consulting the clues, because the permutation rule alone can force it.

4. Split each line at its tallest tower

The tallest building is the hinge of every line: always visible from either side, it hides everything behind it, splitting a row into two independent halves. The left clue depends only on cells up to and including the tallest tower; the right clue only on cells from the tallest back to the right edge.

Use the split to place more than the tallest. If a row needs a left clue of 3 and the tallest sits near the right end, the cells to its left must show exactly two record climbs; reject any ordering yielding one or three.

  • The same trick works down columns with the top and bottom clues.

5. Test-fit the surviving orderings of a row

For short boards, borrow the built-in solver's tactic: list the orderings of 1 through n that match a row's two side clues, then check each survivor against the columns. On 4×4 a row rarely leaves more than a handful, and often exactly one.

When one ordering survives, fill the row outright, because you have proven it. When several survive, test the cheapest candidate against the columns and let the red flags speak.

6. Read the red flags as free hints

The board highlights conflicts, so let it teach. A cell turns red when its value repeats in its row or column, when a full line fails a clue from either end, or when the filled part already shows more visible towers than the clue allows.

The last check is the subtlest: reading from a clue side, count records among filled cells, and the moment the running total passes the clue the line can never recover.

  • With a full-length clue every filled cell must add a record, and the far side is judged only once a line is complete, so finish the line before moving on.

7. A routine for fast, confident solves

Sweep every side for clue 1 and full-length clues first, then take the row or column with the tightest options and work outward, alternating directions so every digit is checked twice.

Easy 4×4 boards teach the anchor rules; Medium 5×5 and Hard 6×6 are where splitting lines pays off. Trust the conflict warnings, erase experiments without regret, and use Hint only when a board stalls.
